London's Piccadilly Circus

Piccadilly Circus is one of London’s most popular tourist destinations and is located in the City of Westminster in London’s West End. You can sit by the famous Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, otherwise known as the statue of Eros, whose naked statue cast in aluminium stands atop the fountain, in the centre of glamorous Piccadilly Circus and watch the world go by. And then have your photo taken in front of the iconic advertising screens whose videos and animations, along with a host of neon illuminated signs, have dominate the landscape for over a century. Coca Cola has had a sign here since 1954!

From Piccadilly Circus, you can easily walk to Piccadilly, Leicester Square, Shaftesbury Avenue or Regent Street. The closest Underground station is Piccadilly Circus, which is served by the Bakerloo and Piccadilly lines. This station is one of the very few on the London Underground to have no buildings on street level – everything here is subterranean.

Other major attractions nearby include Leicester Square, Trafalgar Square, The National Portrait Gallery, The National Gallery, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, the London Pavilion and Criterion Theatre. It is also close to St. James’s Palace and Buckingham Palace, where you can watch the Changing of the Guard Ceremony, as well as 10 Downing St. and Big Ben.

Piccadilly is a London thoroughfare that has been in existence since the early 1600’s. It has been so busy for so long with traffic, pedestrians, and tourists, that the phrase, “It’s like Piccadilly Circus” is used in popular English parlance to refer to a place which is exceptionally busy. And they say that if a person stands in Piccadilly Circus for long enough they will eventually bump into everybody they know!

If you wish to take one of London’s double decker, hop-on, hop-off buses, there are stops in both Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus.
